Rare variant edition of this fascinating political caricature map by Frederick Rose of the countries of Europe, which includes a paste down in German, covering up the original Reference text, which is in English.
Known as the Octopus Map, based upon the brooding presence of the Russian Empire, which is depicted as a massive octopus, whose tentacles stretch out towards Europe, Fred Rose's serio-comic maps are among the most fascinating of this late 19th and early 20th Century genre.
In this map, the Octopus has Turkey, Poland and Russia in its tentactles, but has been wounded in the Crimea and is being fought off by Germany. Most of the other nations are cautious observers. Fred Rose's map followed the style created by a Frenchman, Joseph Goggin, showing Russia as an octopus.
