Description

Extremely rare letter sheet map of Richland County, Dakota Territory, which served as the stationary for J.H. Miller, Sheriff, Richland County, N.D.

The map was apparently not updated every year, as Dakota had been a territory for nearly a year at the time this letter was written and it would seem from the identification of North Dakota on the verso in the printed date line that this was no mystery to the printer. Likely the expense needed to correct the front was deemed unnecessary.

The verso of the map includes a marvelous 12 line poem, apparently written by Sherriff Miller, shortly after his re-election in 1890. The following except appeared in an early history of Richland County, published before Miller became Sheriff:

J. H. Miller, first Mayor of the City of Wahpeton, B. in Oneida Co., N. Y., 1844. Moved from there to Illinois 1851, and 1867 moved to Iowa and engaged in farming. Aug. 11, 1862, enlisted in army, where he served nearly three years, being engaged in several battles. Wounded five times. Honoralily discharged 1865 for disability. Came to Wahpeton from Iowa 1878. Engaged in business of selling farm machinery. Elected to Territorial Legislature in fall of 1880, and was one of the hard and efficient workers in that body, taking special pains to secure the county seat at Wahpeton. Is now Clerk of Courts and popular with the masses. His election to the Mayoralty of Wahpeton was at the first charter election, April, 1885. . . .

A history of Richard County: its geographical boundaries, township organizations, soil, improved and unimproved lands, early settlers, leading farmers... (1886).

A marvelous bit of history.
