Description

Rare early view of the newly laid out town of Azusa. In 1887,

Jonathan Slauson and a group of local developers laid out the town of Azusa. This plan was likely published by Slauson for promotional purposes, and is almost certainly the first published view of the City.

Between the years 1886 and 1891, E.S. Moore drew sixteen different California city plans, including the Southern California towns of San Jacinto, Elsinore, Coronado Beach, Monrovia, Glendora, Alosta, Redlands and Alhambra. The majority of his work would appear to have been done for land speculators, looking to promote new towns in Southern California.

In this view, First Street is shown in the lower portion of the print, 11th Street in the distance. On the left is Orange Ave. On the right is Cerritos Ave. The two inset views show the A.T. & S.F. Depot and Hotel Azusa. Moore began his career drawing views for county atlases, including work for Andreas in 1873 and Thompson & West, as early as 1876, before becoming active as a publisher of promotional views.

OCLC locates 2 examples (Library of Congress and Bancroft Library). We previously handled a lesser example of the view in 2005.
