Scarce and highly detailed map of Florida,

The map is one of the best of the General Land Office Survey maps of Florida and one of the few issued in original outline color. Shows the extent of the state survey work in Florida, current county configurations, early roads in the southern part of the state, railroad lines, etc. An essential map for Florida collectors.

The present example was found in a collection rolled maps and is therefore not suffering from the usual fold splits and fold weakness which is normal for this map.

Good example of Ogilby's important early view of St. Augustine. St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez, as a base of operations for protection of the Spanish trade routes to its American colonies in the West Indies. Menendez named the settlement St. Augustine, after the day of the festival of San Augustine. The first known plan of the city was sketched by Baptista Boazio, an artist who traveled with Sir Francis Drake, in 1586, at which time Drake raided St. Augustine. This view was originally drawn from Gerrit van Schagen's work and depicts a fictionalized view of the town with mountains and other fanciful embellishments. From John Ogilby's seminal atlas America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World, published in London in 1671. Ogilby's work is an English translation of Arnoldus Montanus' Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld…, published in Amsterdam, although greatly expanded in some instances and with new maps and views. Minor soiling at centerfold and a bit of toning, but a still a nice example.
