Rare early Southern California Map/View, extending from the Mojave Desert, Barstow and Victorville to San Diego and Tijuana, with a detailed inset of the LA and San Pedro Harbor areas.

The primary map is done in the style of a birdseye view and provides a terrific snapshot of Southern California at the end of the 19th Century. Many early towns are noted, some of which have faded into history. The Southern California Railway lines are noted in red, beginning at Union Staiton and extending to San Bernardino, Highlyand, Aplin, Mentone, Crafton, Redlands, Victoria, Colton, Rialto, Etiwanda, Rocheser, North Cucamonga, Ontario, Lordsburg, etc. A separate line connects San Bernardiino to just north of Oceanside, via Riverside, Box Sprints, Perris, Elsinore, Linda Rosa and Temecula, with a break in the line between Temecula and Ranchita, where the line resumes and continues through Fallbrook and De Luz. A spur of the same line connects Perris with Menifee, Winchester and San Jacinto.

A coastal route from Ocanside to San Diego and continuing on to Coronado via Oneonta (Imperial Beach) and the Silver Strand. A spur of this route connects to Escondido, via Loma Alta, Buena and San Marcos. Another main line goes from LA to Orange and then south via Irvine, El Toro, Capistrano, San Juan and San Onofre. From LA, another route heads west toward the beaches, splitting in Inglewood and extending to Santa Monica and Redondo. A final proposed route goes from LA to San Pedro. This route was the brainchild of LA Mayor MP Snyder during his first term as Mayor (1896-1898).

Many of the place names shown on the map were boomtowns which either never developed or have otherwise been absorded or faded into history. Other towns in the valley, including Chatsworth Park, Burbank, Glendale and Tropico are connected to LA by other rail lines. Towns like Shorb, Savana, Bassett, Lemon, Spader, and Sansevain show up on the Southern Pacific line, connecting LA and San Bernardino south of the Southern California Railway Line. The line connecting Riverside and Orange includes Torba, Gypsum, Rincon, Alvord, Arlington and Casa Blanca. Nice detail in San Diego as well, where La Jolla, False Bay, Point Loma and its lighthouse, the Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado Beach, National City, Chula Vista, Otay Mesa, Del Mar and Ecinitas are shown in nice detail. The San Pedro inset is very detailed, and includes details of the harbor, wharfs, the Terminal Railway from Long Beach, the Inner Harbor, projected Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railway, Wilmington, etc.
