Here we offer a complete copy of Birkbeck's Notes On A Journey In America, From the Coast of Virginia To the Territory of Illinois. London, 1818. The second edition of this marvelous little work, bound in contemporary quarter leather with gilt stamped binding, chipped at the head and toe of the spine and front and rear hinges cracked, but an internally very nice copy of this work, which includes this excellent map of the Old Northwest, featuring the classical error which pushed Illinois off of Lake Michigan. Overall a nice example of this interesting book and map, one of the few English language journals through this region illustrated with a map.
