Description

Small map of North America, with an image of the American Flag (13 stars, 13 stripes) to the right of the map.

While the geography of the map is unremarkable, the appearance of the American Flag on a printed map from this time period is quite remarkable, especially if it is printed in America. The choice of the phrase "American States" is more suggestive of an English origin, but for the moment, we cannot say with certainty.

According to the seller, this rare early map of North America appeared in Elements of geography : designed for young students in that science, by Benjamin Workman, published in Philadelphia. The seller identified the map as also having appeared in The Youth's General Introduction to Geography, published by William Perks (and claimed to have a copy of Perks' book in his personal collection as well).

Regardless of the source, this is the first time we have ever seen the map, which is unquestionably rare.
