Description

Rare American engraved Revolutionary War map of the area around Boston, published in the July 1789 edition of The Columbian Magazine.

The map is believed to have been engraved by James Trenchard but the map carries no imprint or credit to the engraver. The map shows Boston at its center, extending west to Worchester, north to above Salem and Marblehead, and south as far as Marshfield. The map illustrates and dates the various battles fought in and around Boston during the American Revolution, with cross swords locating battles at Concord (19 April 75), Lexington (19 April 75) and Bunker Hill (untitled on the map -- 7 June 75).

Another interesting feature are the annotations along the early roads, showing the distances from Boston to towns and villages on the routes to Worcester and Rutland. The map has an unfinished feel to it, as seveal towns are located, but not named and not all of the distances were included. The map is quite rare on the market. with no prior auction records or dealer catalogue entries recorded.

The Columbian Magazine, published between 1786 and 1792, was a monthly periodical published by a group that included Mathew Carey and Francis Hopkinson. In 1790, the magazine format was altered and the name changed to The Universal Asylum and Columbian Magazine, with Benjamin Rush as the leading contributor. Rush was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence, a social activist, and a leading abolitionist.
