Description

Fascinating manuscript map of the United States by Charles van der Linde (signed).

While the map is undated, the depiction of Iowa Territory suggests that the map dates from sometime between 1838 and 1845, prior to the US annexation of Texas. The use of the early Indiant District names suggests that the map was likely drawn around 1840.

The map is a marvelous snapshot of the US on the eve of the great push Westward. Only a handful of towns are named west of the Mississippi, including LIttle Rock, Jefferson, St. Louis, Ft. St. Anthony, Ft. Mandan, Astoria and Columbia. The map also provides a good representation of the great Rivers of the West.
