Description

Rare decorative edition of Rapkin's map of North America, with 10 decorative vignettes.

While at first glance, the map is similar to John Tallis's map of North America, the two maps are different in all respects. The Rapkin includes a earlier snapshot of the cartography of North America,10 completely different vignettes and a different decorative border.

The insets include Captain Parry's ship wintering in the Arctic, an Indian Hunting Buffalo, an Indian Chief in a village scene, Niagara Falls, a scene from ancient Mexico, the first landing of Columbus, a Whaling expedition and a geyser in Iceland.

Geographically, the map shows Oregon Territory and Missouri Territory, along with Texas and California in the west, pre-dating Nebraska Territory, which shows on the Tallis map. This is the first time we have handled the map and only the second example we have seen on the market. The map probably comes from in the British edition of Hinton's History of the United States.
