Description

One of the best maps of Texas produced during its first years as a state. Dr. Wislizenus of St. Louis made a scientific tour of the region in 1846-47 at his own expense, following the Santa Fe Road by the Cimerron Route to Santa Fe, then down the Rio Grande to El Paso and Chihuahua, where he was detained for six months until Colonel Doniphan's arrival in the region, at which point Wislizenus accepted a position in Doniphan's medical staff and returned to the US by way of Monterrey. Wheat notes that the map is of considerable value. Shows a daily account of Wislizenus' route, as well as a number of other contemporary routes through region. A number of the early Texas settlements are shown along with other notes. Wheat 572.
