Description

First (unrecorded?) state of Nolin's rare large format map of Sicily.

Nolin's map is dedicated to Filipo V. The basic configuration and place names follow the map of Giacomo Cantelli. A later edition, with lengthy text annotation in the upper left corner, appeared in Nolin's Theatre de la guerre en Italie, published for the first time in 1701 and had a subsequent reprint. Includes an ornate decorative cartouche with coat of arms and volcano. The map is quite rare, with no examples appearing in dealer catalogues in the past 25 years. While we have had one example of the later state of the map (2002), we were not able to locate any examples or references to this early edition of the map.

Condition Description
Minor tear and loss at upper centerfold, just touching neat line and minor stain in the same section of the map.
Reference
Dufour / Lagumina 166 (later edition).
