Description

Early state of Hendrick Doncker's chart of the British Isles.

Striking sea chart of the British Isles, showing north oriented to the right and embellished by decorative cartouches, coats of arms and two decorative compass roses. Two smaller compass roses show north with the magnetic variation. The map extends to include the English Chanel and coastline of Normandy and identifies soundings, sand bars, fishing banks and navigational hazards. A nice example of this scarce chart.

"Hendrick Doncker became one of the most active of the marine atlas and chart publishers in Amsterdam in the second half of the seventeenth century. He was the first to follow Arnold Colom with a comprehensive sea atlas" -- Burden.

Hendrick Doncker Biography

Hendrik Doncker was a prominent bookseller in Amsterdam best known for his sea charts and nautical atlases. He issued his own original charts, which he updated frequently, and also worked with colleagues like Pieter Goos, for example to produce the pilot guide, De Zeespeigel. He died in 1699, after fifty years in business. His plates then passed to Johannes van Keulen.
