Description

Detailed map of Kansas City and environs, published by G.M. Hopkins of Philadelphia and promoting the Winner Investment Company. The map extends to Liberty, Leavenworth and Olathe, among other small towns and shows an eleborate township grid, with "The North Side Syndicate" lands in pink, most likely the lands owned by Willard E. Winner.

Willard E. Winner came to Kansas City, Kansas City in 1852, at the age of three years old. He worked for the post office until 1877, when he opened a real estate office, and in 1883 organized the Winner Investment Company, through which he became an active real estate speculator, sub-divider and home builder. In 1883, Winner commenced plans to build a city across the Missouri from Kansas City, connected by a bridge. He built a rock road that became Swift Avenue and started constructing a bridge across the Missouri River. He then purchased land and laid subdivisions in town lots. The city was well planned and built with homes, commercial houses, paved and lighted streets, a water works system and parks in advance of its inhabitants. The district was incorporated on November 4, 1912, as the Town of North Kansas City.

The map is scarce, with only one prior listing in a dealer catalog in the past 25 years (Murray Hudson, June 1995).
