Gorgeous example of the rare first edition of Hugo Allard's rare and important map of the region from the Australia, Van Diemens Land and Japan in the East to the Indian Ocean, Cape of Good Hope and the region around the Red Sea in the west.

The map is noteworthy for its exceptional treatment of the discoveries of Abel Tasman during his two voyages in the region from 1642 to 1644, which resulted in the discovery of Tasmania (Antoni van Diemen's landt) among other highly important discoveries in the region. Van Diemen's Land it shown in too large a proportion to the rest of the Australian Continent, which has still not been definitively established as being separate from Papua New Guinea.

The map was first issued by Hugo Allard around 1660 and later reissued by his son Carel Allard, who changed revised the map and information in the cartouche.
