Description

Rare separate map of Arkansas Territory which predates the creation of the Arkansas-Indian Territory border in 1828. Louisiana Territory was created in 1805 and became Missouri Territory in 1812. From this, the Arkansas and New Madrid districts were created in 1812 and became counties in 1815. In 1819, part of New Madrid and Arkansas Counties, along with Indian Lands south and west of the Arkansas River became Arkansas Territory, which extended to Mexico along the Red River. This elongated Territorial configuration lasted until 1828. This map shows 9 named counties, one unnamed and a massive Indian region to the west. It includes the early Miller County, a portion of which is in modern day Texas. A virtually unknown map.
