Description

Early edition of Homann's decorative plan of Madrid in spectacular full original color.

This decorative plan includes a number of ornate views of Madrid, including a prospect of the Castle, the Plaza Mayor (with a bull fight in progress), the Buen Retiro and an aerial view of the Castle, along with a view of Hermitage St. Antonio. While the lack of the privilege makes the plan more interesting from the viewpoint of a collector, it is the extraordinary quality of the original color that makes this example of the Homann plan of Madrid particularly desirable.

When compared to other examples of the plan which have been offered on the colletor's market in recent times, the present example is easily distinguishable for the special detail and quality of the coloration of the costumed figures, the beautifully washed skies in the 5 views and the rich and exacting detail of the colorist. The present example is the best Homann Madrid plan which we have ever seen.

Homann Heirs Biography

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
