Description

Scarce birdseye view of the town of Mirandola, in the Duchy of Modena, prior to the reunification of Italy by Victor Emmanuel.

Mirandola was founded as a Renaissance city-fortress. For 4 centuries, it was a possession of the Pico family, whose most famous family member was the polymath Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. It was besieged in 1510 and 1551, before being acquired by the Duchy of Modena in 1711.

This map appeared in Albrizzi's Storia di tutti i popoli del Mondo, the Italian edition of Thomas Salmon's popular History of the World.
