Description

Important map of Michigan Territory and the Northwestern Territories, drawn from the exploration of the region in 1820.

The expedition led by General Lewis Cass was one of the many that he made as governor of Michigan for the purpose of visiting and negotiating with various Indian tribes of the Old Northwest. In this case, he also proposed to determine the source of the Mississippi River.

Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who went along with Gov. Lewis Cass and James Doty, mapped the route taken by the expedition in 1820. This journey, undertaken at the suggestion of Secretary of War John Calhoun, sought to survey and map the topography and natural resources, and learn about the various Indian nations, of the northern Great Lakes region. This map is one of the most detailed then available of the region, and includes many local features for the area that would later become Wisconsin.

No record of the map appearing separately in a dealer catalogue in the past 25 years.
