Description

Important and extremely rare map of the region around Naples, published by Alessandro Baratta in 1616.

The map is based upon a map drawn by Mario Cartaro ( born Viterbo 1560 - died Naples 1612) after a survey by Reggi Lagni ( who is believed to have been the Royal Engineer of the Kingdom of Naples at the time). The map illustrates the region around Naples and shows the Canal to Lacerra and beyond. It is one the earliest obtainable maps of the region published in Napoli and especially important as an early work of Baratta. The map was the prototype for all maps of the Gulf of Naples and its vicinity published untill the end of the XVIII century and is of the highest importance for the region.

Alessandro Baratta is perhaps most famous for his highly influential plan of the City of Naples, Fidelissimae Urbis Neapolitanae Cum Omnibus Viis Accurata et Nova Delineatio, published in 1629, a copy of which hangs in the Hall of the Cupids in Naples. One of his earliest known works is this map of Campaniae, engraved for the Panegyricus of Garcia Barrionuevo, Marques de Cussano .
