Description

Rare promotional broadside advertising land for sale in Torrance, California.

In 1911, Financier Jared Sidney Torrance and Joseph F. Sartori (founder of the Security Pacific Bank) coordinated the development of the suburb of Torrance, California. The plans were announced in the Los Angeles Times in 1911. They purchased 2800 acres in southwest Los Angeles and incorporated the Dominguez Land Corporation.

Torrance hired the famous designers F.L. Olmstead Jr. and Irving Gill to design the community plan. In 1916, 125 acres was given to the Pacific Electric Railway for a repair yard, which is shown at the top of this map. Later, the Union Tool Company, Columbia Steel Company, Western Sheet Glas, Llewelyn Iron Works, Pacific Metal Products and Hendrie Rubber would establish plants in Torrance. The original zoning laws excluded "non-caucasians" from living in the community.
