Description

Nice example of the 1785 edition of Klockhoff's map of the United States, one of the earliest obtainable maps to name the United States on a printed map.

Klockhoff's map first appeared in the 1782 edition of Mandrillon's Le Spectateur Americain . . . , first published in Paris in 1782. The 1782 edition of Klockhoff's map is identified by Ashley Baynton Williams article Early Maps of the United States , which appears in the on line journal Map Forum.

The map includes a detailed depiction of the United States at the end of the American Revolution, along with 5 paragraphs of observations, the latter of which appear only on the editions printed in 1783, 1784 and 1785.
