Description

Extremely rare map of Florida Territory, issued shortly after Florida became a Territory of the United States. While similar to Carey & Lea's map, there are significant differences. The Weiland map shows 7 counties, making it amoung the earliest maps of Florida to show counties. The map also includes significanlty more cartoraphical and topographical material than the Carey & Lea and is much rarer. Even where the maps include the same information, the details are very different. For instance, the shape of the lake in southern florida and the manner in which it is fed by the St. John's River are very different. Because the Weiland maps were issued separately and only very rarely appeared in atlas form, this map is extremely rare on the market and this is the first example we have ever seen.
