Description

Gorgeous map of Mexico and Upper California, distinctly showing Texas shortly prior to its becoming a Republic. Nice detail throughout the map, especially in Upper California. The Rio Buenaventura extends from the Pacific to Lake Teguayo and the Rio Sacramento or Timpanagos and Los Monges Rivers extend from the Pacific to Lake Timpanagos (Salt Lake). Classical example of pre-Fremont Cartography in the West. The missions of Upper California are named. A few settlements along the eastern slope of the Rocky Mtns in New Mexico and also in Texas. The map reflects the state of the region shortly before the settlement in Texas and the West exploded in the 1840s and 1850.
