Description

Striking double hemisphere map of the World, in the style popularized by Sanson. This is one of the earliest maps of the World published by a woman. Mlle. Duvall, daughter of Pierre Du Val, issued this interesting world map in 1684. The map includes California as an island, curious Terra De Iesso land bridge to Asia, New Zealand still attached to Terres Australes et Inconnues (the unknown southern continent), narrow Straits of Mageellasn (without Le Maire's discoveries) and a host of other cartographic anomalies. Two compass roses and other embellishments. Minor misfolding and repairs, mostly at the lower centefold, and a bit of worming in the upper margins, but still a decorative example in nice color. Only 1 dealer and 1 auction record in the past 25 years. Shirley 522.
