Description

Rare series of maps, illustrating the Report of the Marin County ranches of James McM. Shafter, deceased, by Julia Shafter Hamilton.

The map provides a general map and two detailed maps, locating the Shafter Ranches, north of San Francisco Bay. James Shafter, his brother Oscar and Charles Webb Howard, acquired Rancho Punto de los Reyes and Rancho Punto de los Reyes Sobrante (Sobrante means suplus or left over) from Dr. Andrew Randall, following Dr. Randall's being murdered by Joseph Hetherington, one of Dr. Randall's creditors. Oscar, a California State Supreme Court Justice and James, a judge and Regent of the University of California, also acquired Rancho Tomales y Baulenes. James began cattle ranching on the property and also founded the town of Inverness.

OCLC lists only 3 copies (California Historical Society, Marin County Free Library and UC Berkeley).
