Rare pictorial Treasure Hunter's map of the Spanish Main, published in Bradford, Massachusetts in 1940.
George Annand’s mid-century pictorial celebrates the golden-age legends of Caribbean piracy while providing a geographic primer to the Gulf of Mexico, Greater and Lesser Antilles, and adjacent Spanish Main. The main map illustrates the principal sea-lanes with stylized sailing vessels, compass roses, and calligraphic labels. Insets at lower left focus on two reputed treasure sites, the Isla de la Plata off Ecuador and Costa Rica’s Cocos Island. Annotated vignettes dot the coastline to mark famous haunts and captures: Port Royal, Nassau, Tortuga, Cartagena, Veracruz, and others. A dramatic central scene shows a blazing galleon under attack, while smaller panels narrate booty hidden ashore and Spanish gold convoys seized at sea.
The baroque title cartouche, hung with boarding-lanterns, riggings and crossed guns, presents cameo portraits of Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Jean Lafitte, and Sir Henry Morgan, encapsulating the era’s most storied rogues.
