Description

Issued in conjunction with the 1887 edition of Frémont’s Memoirs of My Life, this detailed map traces the routes of his five expeditions across the American West between 1841 and 1854. The cartographic image presents a sweeping view from the Mississippi River to the Pacific and from the Mexican borderlands to the Canadian plains, highlighting Frémont’s central role in mapping and reporting on vast and previously uncharted regions.

The reader can follow the major stages of his fieldwork, including the 1842 survey to South Pass, the 1843–44 journey across the Great Basin, the winter crossing of the Sierra Nevada in 1846, the 1848–49 expedition through the Gunnison country, and the harrowing final mission into the San Juan Mountains in 1853–54.
