Description
Rare late and expanded state of this early 19th Century English World Atlas, published by Clement Cruttwell.
Crutwell issued Gazetteer's of France (1793) and the Netherlands (1794), before publishing his scarce Universal Gazetteer in 1798. The second and expanded edition was never completed, as Cruttwell died in August 1808.
First issued in about 1797, the present edition, which was intended to accompany his unfinished 1808 Universal Gazetteer, is expanded to 28 maps.
Four of the maps relate directly to the Americas:
- British America, Comprehending Canada, Labrador, New-Foundland, Nova Scotia, &c.
- United States of America [Mississippi River as western boundary beyond which is "Louisiana"]
- South America
- The West Indies [including West and East Florida]
Rarity
This second edition is very rare.
RBH notes no examples at auction or in dealer catalogs in the past 40 years (last offered for sale in 1981 by Goodspeeds, Catalog 593, #10, for $1,250).
