Rare promotional broadside issued by the Los Angeles Steamship Company, advertising its new direct fortnightly luxury service between Los Angeles and Honolulu aboard the City of Los Angeles and City of Honolulu.
This example features detailed deck plans for the S.S. City of Los Angeles, along with promotional text extolling the vessel's accommodations and amenities.
The image presents five meticulously labeled deck plans—Boat Deck (A Deck) and Decks B through E—clearly marking staterooms, cabins, social areas, and essential facilities. At the upper right, an illustration shows the City of Los Angeles in full profile at sea. The promotional text emphasizes the vessel’s distinction as the "Largest First-Class Passenger Carrier" operating on the Pacific, boasting luxurious staterooms, large deck spaces, deluxe suites, and modern conveniences such as telegraphs and telephones. Special features included a wireless telegraph system, twin turbine engines, and a gross tonnage of 22,500 tons.
Originally launched in 1899 as the SS Grosser Kurfürst for North German Lloyd, the ship was seized during World War I and renamed the USS Aeolus for military transport purposes. In 1922, it underwent extensive refurbishment and reemerged as the S.S. City of Los Angeles under the Los Angeles Steamship Company, becoming a highly popular luxury liner serving the burgeoning Hawaii tourist route until its retirement and scrapping in 1937.
Several iterations of this broadside were issued, each with a different photograph. The present example is revised to July 15, 1926.
This example bears the signature Jack Smoot at the center left and a small illustration of the emblem of the company.
