Description

Published in Weimar in 1838 by the Geographical Institute, this finely engraved map of the Tyrol region was compiled and drawn by Carl Ferdinand Weiland from the “special maps” issued by the Austrian General Quartermaster’s Office.

The main image portrays Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and adjacent Liechtenstein at provincial scale, with boundaries hand-colored in outline to distinguish Kreise (districts). Rugged Alpine relief is rendered in dense hachures. An elaborate calligraphic title cartouche occupies the lower left, followed by a legend that classifies settlements by population size, identifies fortresses, spas, post stations, and alpine huts, and lists cartographic abbreviations.

A statistical table shows each district’s chief town, population, and secondary urban centers, data reflecting a total area of 516 German square miles under the Innsbruck government.
