Description

A decorative miniature world map in twin hemispheres by Daniel de la Feuille, showing the world according to early 18th-century European cartographic knowledge. The outlines of the continents are broadly recognizable, but with notable inaccuracies: California is still depicted as an island; Australia is only partially delineated; and the great southern landmass (Terres Antarctiques) is largely speculative.

The hemispheres are labeled Septentrion and Midy (North and South), and the equator, tropics, and polar circles are all marked. Oceans are prominently named, and major geographical features and regions—such as Groenland, Perou, Arabie, and Chine—are labeled in French. At upper right, a Dutch title cartouche reads Generale Wareld Kaart.

This map appeared in de la Feuille’s Atlas Portatif or similar small-format atlases intended for a commercial and educational audience. The engraving, though compact, is crisply executed and attractively hand-colored.
