Description

Montana and Wyoming named as Chippewa Territory

Scarce map of the United States & Canada, showing remarkable topographic detail in the west, but still including some remarkable territorial anomoalies.

In the north, Montana and Wyoming are given the name Chippewa Territory, pre-dating the creation of the the two territories.   The map also pre-dates the formation of Idaho Territory.

The configuration of Nevada, Utah and California are fascinating.  Utah is quite oversized, pre-dating the Congressional decision to move its boundary with Nevada 2 degrees to the west.  In addition to being much narrower, Nevada is also truncated at the bottom (putting Las Vegas in California) and a curious carve out of California, which in turn extends to far east at its southernmost border with Arizona.

This map is also remarkable for what it does show, including roads, railroads, mountains, rivers, lakes, Indian Tribes, forts, passes and many other details which are not generally present even in American atlas maps of this period. Several keys explain the coloration and other information.
