Description

A well-printed promotional guidebook issued in 1926 by the Yosemite Transportation System (YTS) to highlight the park’s auto tour services. This richly illustrated booklet includes maps and photographic views showcasing the scenic autotrails within Yosemite National Park. A notable feature is a four-page color bird’s-eye map, captioned:

Watercolor sketch of Yosemite National Park, illustrating the extent of the Park and showing the principal routes in the Park of the Yosemite Transportation System and the Horseshoe Route. The size of Yosemite Valley in proportion to the rest of Yosemite National Park is enlarged to show the location of the famous points of interest.

This guide reflects a transformative period in Yosemite’s automobile-based tourism industry. In 1925, the Yosemite Park & Curry Co. was formed through the consolidation of the Curry Camping Company and the Yosemite National Park Company, absorbing the Horseshoe Route into the YTS tour system. The following year saw the dedication of the all-year highway between Merced and Yosemite Valley on July 31, 1926, further ensuring Yosemite’s accessibility for motorists. The present 1926 guidebook includes rates and information for Camp Curry - under "personal management of Mrs. D. A. Curry" as well as hotels and lodges, and the various motor routes available: Tioga Pass, Horsehoe, Y T S Motor Route, and the like.

Printed by the Sunset Press of San Francisco.
