Description
This finely engraved map, titled Ducatus Carniolae Tabula, depicts the Habsburg duchy of Carniola, along with neighboring regions in Istria, as it stood in the early eighteenth century.
The map illustrates rivers, mountains and scattered market towns and villages in the mountainous interior to the Adriatic coast, while yellow, orange, and blue outline wash neatly delineate the duchy’s frontiers with Friuli, Styria, Croatia, and Istria. Major place-names appear in Latin (e.g., Lubiana for Ljubljana, Sinus Tergestinus for the Gulf of Trieste, and Sinus Flanaticus for the Kvarner Gulf).
The map is very rare on the market.
