Description

This rare 1771 English plan, by Captain Joseph Smith Speer, depicts the town and harbor of Puerto Bello (Portobelo, Panama), an important Spanish colonial port on the Caribbean coast. It appeared in The West-India Pilot, a navigational atlas for British mariners. The chart details the town’s fortifications, including Castillo de Hierro, Castillo de La Gloria, and Castillo de Germaine, along with depth soundings in the harbor and the surrounding mountainous terrain.
