This map captures a pivotal moment in Hawaiian history, documenting the Honolulu at the time of the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani on January 17, 1893. Significantly, it records the immediate implementation of American property ownership, reflecting the swift consolidation of power by the Provisional Government. The map serves as both a geographic and political artifact, illustrating the extent of American economic influence in Hawaiʻi even before the islands’ formal annexation.  .

Created in 1894, the year the Republic of Hawaiʻi was declared, the map predates the January 1895 counter-revolutionary attempt to restore Queen Liliʻuokalani to the throne. This failed uprising resulted in her arrest and subsequent house imprisonment in ʻIolani Palace and later at Washington Place, marking the final effort to reclaim Hawaiian self-rule before annexation became inevitable.
