Description

A Large Chart of the North Coast of the Gulf of America.

Engraved nautical chart depicting the Gulf Coast from St. Marks, Florida, to Galveston, Texas, with soundings, navigational hazards, and coastal settlements. Includes inset maps detailing the Bar & Entrance of Mobile Bay and the Galveston Bar & Harbour, surveyed under the direction of Major J.K. F. Mansfield and A.D. Bache of the U.S. Coast Survey. Notations indicate the compass variation within the charted area, as well as tidal patterns affecting various bays and inlets along the coast.

Published by E. & G.W. Blunt, one of the foremost American nautical chart publishers of the 19th century, the chart compiles data from multiple authorities, including Major J.D. Graham (U.S. Topographical Engineers), Commodore E.W. Moore (Texan Navy), and U.S. Naval and military officers. Additions made in 1851 incorporate surveys by Commander Powell, Lieutenant Simmes, and Professor Coffin of the U.S. Navy, reflecting updates to the hydrography of the region.

Issued at a time of increasing commercial and military activity in the Gulf of Mexico, this chart provided critical guidance for mariners navigating between Florida and Texas.
