The New York Marathon of 1986

This vibrant and detailed pictorial map captures the route of the 1986 New York City Marathon, weaving through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan before concluding in Central Park. Rendered in a cartoon style, the map combines whimsical artistic elements with an impressive level of detail, highlighting not just the marathon’s path but also New York City’s iconic buildings, bridges, and landscapes.

The marathon course is prominently marked with a bold yellow path that begins on Staten Island at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, winds through Brooklyn and Queens, crosses the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan, briefly loops through the Bronx, and returns to Manhattan to finish in Central Park. Along the way, runners pass many of the city’s most famous landmarks, which are illustrated in charming detail. The Statue of Liberty, World Trade Center, and Central Park are just a few of the recognizable features that dot the landscape.

The bridges—Brooklyn Bridge, Queensboro Bridge, and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge—are particularly well-rendered, emphasizing their role as key points along the marathon route. The East River and Hudson River are depicted with sailboats and ferries, adding a sense of movement and life to the scene.

In addition to geographic features, the map includes playful references to sponsors and businesses associated with the event. Mercedes-Benz, Seiko, Perrier, and The Runner are among the marathon’s official sponsors prominently noted. Javits Center and Bellaciccio, labeled as the "Official Bread of the NY Marathon," reflect the combination of corporate sponsorship and local charm that characterizes the event.
