Hand-colored engraved sea chart depicting the Atlantic coasts of Andalusia, the Algarve, and the Barbary Coast, covering the coastline from Cape St. Vincent in Portugal to Cape Cantin in Morocco.
The chart includes a highly decorative title cartouche in the upper right, adorned with putti, scrollwork, and fruit and plants. Coastal settlements and ports are prominently labeled, with particular attention to key harbors such as Gibraltar, Cádiz, Tangier, and Mogador. The surrounding waters are populated with depth soundings, reflecting the chart’s practical use for navigation, while the land areas have little detail. Two illustrated ships at sea add to the visual appeal.
This chart was produced by Johannes van Loon and Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge. Van Loon was active as a hydrographer, while Janssonius van Waesberge operated as a map publisher in the competitive Amsterdam printing market of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Van Loon's charts are rarer than those of many of his contemporaries.
