Description

This map offers a richly detailed representation of France and its provinces during the late 17th Century. Created by Nicolaes Visscher, a renowned Dutch cartographer, the map provides an accurate and meticulously labeled depiction of France's geographical, administrative, and infrastructural features.

The map encompasses the entire kingdom of France, extending from the English Channel (La Manche) in the north to the Mediterranean Sea in the south. Major rivers, including the Seine, Loire, Rhône, and Garonne, are prominently displayed, along with cities such as Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, and Marseille. The provinces are clearly delineated with color outlines, emphasizing their boundaries and administrative divisions. Additionally, the map highlights key routes (via angiariae), making it a practical reference for travelers and administrators during the period.

A striking cartouche in the lower-left corner showcases allegorical figures representing France's power and prosperity. The central figure, flanked by a fleurs-de-lis coat of arms, symbolizes the French monarchy, while other figures, including cherubs and Neptune with a trident, emphasize France's naval and economic strength.
