Rare Thomas Starling Biblical Map of Palestine

This rare map presents a detailed representation of the Holy Land during the time of Jesus Christ. Published by the Sunday School Union and designed by Thomas Starling, it serves as a visual and educational tool for understanding the geographical and historical context of the Gospels. The map was intended for use in biblical studies and Sunday schools, aligning with Victorian-era priorities of religious education.

The map depicts the Holy Land divided into key regions such as Galilee, Samaria, Judea, Perea, and Decapolis. Extending from Sidon and Tyre in the north to Idumea and the Amalekite territories in the south, it highlights the varied landscapes of ancient Palestine. Central to the composition are the Jordan River, flowing southward from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea, and the surrounding territories, including Ammon, Moab, and Syria, which underscore the region’s connection to neighboring lands.

The map emphasizes cities and towns central to the life and ministry of Jesus, as well as key events in the Gospels. In Galilee, Nazareth (Jesus’ hometown), Cana (site of His first miracle), and Capernaum (a center of His ministry) are prominently marked. In Judea, Jerusalem is highlighted with key landmarks such as Calvary and the Mount of Olives, alongside Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, and Bethany, the home of Lazarus. Samaria includes Sychar, near Jacob’s Well, where Jesus conversed with the Samaritan woman. Regions of Decapolis and Perea include sites such as Gadara and Bethabara, traditionally associated with Jesus’ baptism.

The map employs color-coded regions to differentiate territories, while rivers, mountains, and other physical features are clearly labeled for geographic accuracy. A scale of English miles offers a practical measure of distance, and a compass rose orients the viewer, with north at the top. Annotations such as the “Wilderness of Temptation” and the “Waters of Merom” provide further biblical context and link events to specific locations.
