Description

OThis map, titled World Surface Routes, provides a mid-20th-century depiction of global transportation and navigational systems. Employing the projection method developed by Gerard Mercator in 1569, it reflects the state of the world as of 1957, emphasizing maritime and overland connections essential for global trade, travel, and communication.

The map prominently displays the principal shipping routes, categorized by traffic volume, illustrating the major maritime arteries that facilitated international trade during the mid-20th century. Land-based transportation systems, including major railway lines and transcontinental roads, are carefully marked, providing insight into terrestrial connectivity. Additionally, strategically significant ship canals, such as the Suez and Panama Canals, are highlighted, emphasizing their importance for intercontinental travel and commerce.

Ocean currents, both warm and cold, are meticulously traced, reflecting their critical role in navigation and their influence on global climate patterns. The map also delineates the extreme limits of drift ice, pack ice, and the average winter extent of ice, particularly in polar regions.

The map incorporates degrees of magnetic declination and dip as of 1955, essential data for accurate navigation. Time zone demarcations relative to Greenwich Mean Time are also included, facilitating international coordination and travel.
