Description

This map of the Belgian Congo, titled Congo Nova Descriptio, is a vibrant and richly detailed representation of the region's cultural and geographical features.  This is the first of two pictorial maps of the Belgian Congo produced by the artist, James Thiriar.

The map prominently features a central depiction of the Congo with various ethnic groups, cultural elements, and indigenous artifacts illustrated in vibrant color. Annotations on the map include regions, rivers, and tribal areas, with a legend that organizes the information into categories such as regions (highlighted in green), indigenous types, ritual masks, and specimens of indigenous art.

The map identifies key regions such as Ubangi, Uele, Ituri, Kivu, and others. These regions are marked with corresponding numbers for easy reference, allowing viewers to locate specific areas within the Congo. The vibrant illustrations alongside the map depict traditional attire, cultural activities, and artistic traditions, giving insight into the lives and practices of the various groups inhabiting the region. The border of the map features individual portraits and scenes representing various ethnic groups and cultural practices.

Artifacts and rituals are prominently displayed, highlighting the rich artistic traditions of the Congo's many tribes. Specific sections focus on ritual masks and indigenous art, including ceremonial masks, musical instruments, and statues of cultural significance, such as the Statue of King Bakuba and maternal figures from the Bambala people.

The map categorizes indigenous groups with detailed illustrations, including the Mangbetu, Azande, and Bangala peoples, showcasing their traditional clothing, tools, and rituals. The comprehensive legend at the bottom of the map provides a guide to its symbols and categories, listing regions, masks, indigenous art specimens, and indigenous types. This legend emphasizes the cultural and geographic diversity of the Congo.

The border illustrations add another layer of cultural richness, presenting depictions of Congo residents and their daily lives.

This map serves as both an artistic and ethnographic document, reflecting mid-20th-century perspectives on the Belgian Congo's cultural and natural wealth. Its vibrant illustrations and extensive legend make it a unique artifact of its time, blending cartographic function with cultural storytelling.
