Description

The map and brochure, titled Saarpfalz: Der Schöne Grenzgau ("Saar-Palatinate: The Beautiful Borderland"), dates from the 1930s and provides a colorful and richly detailed depiction of the Saarpfalz region in southwest Germany. Produced by the Landesfremdenverkehrsverband Saarpfalz (Saarpfalz Regional Tourism Association) in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, this promotional material was designed to showcase the region’s cultural, historical, and natural highlights, as well as its transportation infrastructure.

The map features a pictorial and illustrative style typical of the interwar period, highlighting key towns, castles, churches, and scenic landscapes. Each landmark is represented with small, detailed illustrations, giving the map an engaging and almost storybook-like quality. Major routes and connections are prominently marked, including autobahns, major roads, railways, and bus lines, as indicated in the legend. Notably, the Deutsche Weinstraße (German Wine Route) is given prominence, underscoring the region’s association with viticulture and tourism. The inclusion of border crossings into France highlights the Saarpfalz region’s position as a crossroads of German and French culture.

The reverse side of the map contains a wealth of textual information about the region’s history, cultural landmarks, and tourist attractions, divided into thematic sections.
