Description

Maritime Travel at the Turn of the Century

A double-sided map published by the Paris branch of the Scarborough Map Co., illustrating transoceanic and coastal navigation lines connecting the major ports of North and South America one one side and Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania on the other. Red and black lines represent principal shipping routes, many annotated with voyage durations in days. Detailed inset tables list the schedules and routes of major international shipping companies, including German, British, French, and American lines. It also includes a comprehensive matrix of port-to-port distances in nautical miles.

The map captures the maritime infrastructure that underpinned global commerce four years before the opening of the Panama Canal, highlighting routes via the Suez Canal, Magellan Strait, and Cape of Good Hope.
