Promoting Excursions To Napa Valley and Lake County

This broadside fragment, dated May 1898, is an advertising piece issued by the Southern Pacific Company to promote travel to popular resorts in Napa County, Lake County, California, and surrounding regions. It highlights the area's attractions and conveniences, showcasing mineral springs, natural beauty, and easy access via the company's railway lines.

The broadside's central focus is a detailed map of Lake County, illustrating the locations of various resorts, mineral springs, and rail connections from San Francisco to Calistoga. Resorts such as Harbin Springs, Anderson Springs, Howard Springs, Siegler Springs, Highland Springs, Glenbrook, Soda Bay, and Lakeport are prominently mentioned, with an emphasis on their therapeutic mineral waters, healthful climate, and picturesque scenery.

The advertisement appeals to potential travelers by extolling the region's "pure atmosphere," "romantic drives," "charming lakes," and opportunities for activities such as boating, fishing, and camping. Particular attention is drawn to the Geysers in Sonoma County, described as "100 miles by rail and stage" from San Francisco, with "queer and attractive sights," dry climate, and cozy accommodations. This section paints the Geysers as a "delightful place to spend a few weeks."

The broadside provides detailed ticket prices for travel via Calistoga from San Francisco and Sacramento. Single-trip and round-trip rates are listed for various destinations, making the brochure both a promotional and practical resource for travelers. Destinations such as Middletown, Harbin Springs, and Highland Springs feature prominently in the rate table.

The full broadside includes a title at the top and two additional lines of text.
