Description
A Civil War Rarity
Nice example of Gustavus Bechler's rare separately issued map of Virginia and most of Maryland, issued to illustrate the progress of the American Civil War.
The map is hand colored by counties and provides a tremendously detailed look at Virginia,with special emphasis on the roads and topographical features. The map shows battle sites and dates, along with railroads and some important buildings.
Gustavus Bechler would go on to serve as one of the main topographical engineers for the US Government, conducting many important surveys in the West.
Rarity
The map is very rare, this being the second time we have seen the map offered for sale.
We previously sold an example of the map in 2011.
Condition Description
Segmented and laid on linen. Minor toning. Several linen fold splits, expertly backed on verso.
