Description

Rare separately published map of Italy, with a detailed index at the sides.

An unusual and distinctive large folio map depicting the entirety of Italy, notable for its exceptional detail and extensive annotations, including numerous place names and explanatory notes. At the center, the title is enclosed within an elaborate and decorative cartouche adorned with putti, an eagle, and religious symbols, reflecting both artistry and significance. Beneath the title, the map bears the signature and address of the author, alongside a reference to "première planches," suggesting an intention to create additional maps as part of a series. However, no further maps were published, and this particular map of Italy was never reissued.

Cartographically, the map is an intriguing synthesis of sources. While the Italian peninsula appears to draw heavily from De L’Isle’s work, the islands of Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily are based on Magini’s earlier designs, creating a unique hybrid of cartographic traditions. Flanking the map on both sides are lists of significant cities and towns, complete with their geographical coordinates, adding a layer of precision to this decorative and richly detailed representation of Italy.
