Description

This engraving depicts the Great Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza, based on Cornelis de Bruyn’s observations during his travels in Egypt in the late 17th century. The Sphinx, partially buried in sand, is flanked by the Pyramids, with human figures in local attire and travelers in the foreground. The scene emphasizes the scale of the monuments and the surrounding desert landscape. Engraved for de Bruyn’s Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn door de vermaardste Deelen van Klein Asia, published in 1698.

Cornelis De Bruyn Biography

Cornelis de Bruyn , 1652-c.1726 was a Dutch portrait painter and traveler.

De Bruyn painted for some years in Italy, where he was known, in Rome, as Adonis. Bruyn is remembered chiefly for the records of his extensive travels in Egypt, Persia, India, and other countries, illustrated with his own designs.
